Overview

Many learners and community members face barriers to participating in digital learning due to limited access to devices or assistive technology. EduLinked explored a device lending model that enables people to borrow technology through trusted community partners.

The approach follows a familiar library-style model where equipment can be borrowed for learning, creative media production, and communication.

The challenge

  • Lack of access to computers and tablets
  • Cost barriers to assistive technology
  • Limited opportunities to trial technology before purchase
  • Digital exclusion affecting participation in learning

The device lending model

EduLinked tested a lending model where devices could be distributed through community partners such as libraries, schools and digital inclusion programs.

  • Laptops and tablets for digital learning
  • Assistive technology for communication and accessibility
  • Media production equipment for creative learning
  • Community lending through trusted local organisations

Outcomes and insights

The device lending pilot demonstrated that shared technology systems can support community learning ecosystems and expand access to digital tools.

  • Improved participation in digital learning
  • Increased access to assistive technology
  • Stronger partnerships with community organisations
  • Opportunities for creative media projects

Next steps

EduLinked continues to explore device lending and shared resource models as part of broader digital inclusion initiatives. Future pilots may integrate lending systems with community hubs, libraries and learning programs.
