Volunteer roles & what you’ll do

We describe roles broadly — volunteers choose what suits their interests and availability. Training and support are provided.

Tech helper

Help people with phones, tablets and simple apps at pop-ups and drop-ins. Not required to be an expert — we provide a troubleshooting guide and shadow shifts.

Facilitator

Lead short workshops or activity sessions using provided scripts & Easy Read materials. Training covers inclusive facilitation and behaviour guidance.

Kit manager

Prepare, QA and manage device loan kits and return checks. Helpful for organised people who enjoy logistics and attention to detail.

Welcome host

Be the friendly face at events: welcome participants, manage sign-in, explain formats and help people find support or quiet spaces.

Outreach & promotion

Help promote events, create simple flyers, reach local networks and support recruitment for groups and pilots.

Admin & back-office

Light admin tasks: booking coordination, data entry, volunteer rostering and basic communications.

Training & onboarding

We provide role-specific online or in-person training and a short shadow shift so new volunteers feel confident. Training covers:

  • Inclusive facilitation, communication & trauma-aware practice
  • Basic device checks and simple troubleshooting
  • Kit management, QA and safe handling of devices
  • Safeguarding, consent and privacy essentials
  • Auslan & Easy Read awareness — how to use accessible prompts

We also provide practical quick-guides, role checklists and an experienced volunteer mentor for your first three shifts.

Support & recognition

  • Volunteer induction & ongoing check-ins
  • Small reimbursements for travel or expenses where appropriate
  • Reference letters and recognition events

Volunteer code of conduct & safeguarding

Volunteers follow simple, respectful practice: be welcoming, protect privacy, act safely and escalate concerns. We provide short safeguarding guidance and checklists during induction.

  • Be respectful, inclusive and trauma-aware in interactions
  • Respect participant privacy and consent for photos or data
  • Report safety concerns to the coordinator immediately
  • Follow site-specific safety guidance for children or vulnerable people

FAQ

Do I need experience?
No — many roles are beginner-friendly. We train you and pair you with an experienced volunteer for your first shifts.
How long is a shift?
Shifts vary — 2–4 hours is common. We also offer short rostered duties (1–2 hours) and ad-hoc event support.
Will I get reimbursed?
Volunteers may receive small reimbursements for travel or expenses in line with local policy. We discuss this during onboarding.
Can I volunteer with a disability?
Yes — we design roles and supports to be inclusive. Tell us your access needs in the form so we can arrange suitable tasks and supports.
