Suitable for absolute beginners and people wanting a confidence boost — delivered in small groups with hands-on practice and volunteer support. Auslan-friendly and Easy Read versions of materials are available on request.
Course details
Digital Literacy Basics is a practical, scaffolded program that mixes short workshops, guided practice and easy-to-use templates. It focuses on confident, safe and useful everyday digital tasks.
Learning outcomes
- Set up and use a smartphone, tablet or laptop (email, browsers, video calls).
- Create and manage passwords and basic privacy settings.
- Recognise online scams, manage safe browsing and protect accounts.
- Use government and service websites for forms, health and school portals.
- Access community learning resources and basic troubleshooting steps.
Who this is for
Absolute beginners, learners returning to technology after a break, older adults, carers, and community groups wanting an accessible starter program.
Delivery
- Short workshops (2–3 hours) plus a guided practice session — total 10–14 hours.
- Small groups (6–12 learners) with volunteer hosts for 1:1 support.
- Easy Read handouts, symbol prompts and Auslan summaries available.
- Can be delivered in libraries, community centres or partner sites.

- Intro & device basics: turning on, charging, simple navigation, accessibility settings.
- Communication: email, messaging, video calls and respectful online communication.
- Browsing & searching: reliable search, bookmarks, reading and saving information.

- Using services: booking, government forms, school portals and online payments (practical walkthroughs).
- Troubleshooting & next steps: simple fixes, local support options and how to keep learning.
