Who this is for

  • Teachers and school support staff
  • Allied health professionals and therapists
  • Library staff and community program leads
  • Project leads running device lending or AT clinics
  • Volunteers supporting trials and classroom integration

Learning outcomes

By the end you will be able to:

  • Match simple assistive technology options to functional goals.
  • Plan and run a short classroom or community trial.
  • Configure devices with basic accessibility settings and user profiles.
  • Train staff and family with Easy Read steps and checklists.
  • Produce a short trial report and procurement-ready notes.

Syllabus — modules

  1. Module 1 — AT basics: what AT is, common device types (AAC, switches, eye-gaze, symbol software).
  2. Module 2 — Functional goals: identify everyday tasks and how AT can help.
  3. Module 3 — Matching & selection: simple matching process and trial planning.

Delivery & support

  • Self-paced modules with short videos and captions
  • Optional clinic or partner practice sessions for hands-on trials
  • Facilitator packs and Easy Read guides for classroom staff
  • Auslan-friendly scripts and short videos available on request
  • Templates for trial reports, procurement notes and handover packs

Why this helps

Schools and services often try AT but lack a simple process to test and adopt it. This course gives a clear, repeatable approach so trials are useful and adoption is practical and sustainable.

Frequently asked

Do I need a clinician to do this course?
Not always. Some specialist devices (eye-gaze) need clinical support. The course explains when clinician input is recommended and how to work with partners.
How long are clinics?
Clinic sessions vary (short hands-on slots). We list clinic options and dates when we email the syllabus.
Will I get a certificate?
Yes — on completion of the practice task and assessor feedback, a recognition or certificate is issued.
