In short

This course shows simple steps to make information easy to read and use. You will learn plain language techniques, symbols and layout. You will practise making a short accessible document and a checklist for your team.

Learning outcomes

By the end you will be able to:

  • Write in plain language for clear messages.
  • Create Easy Read documents with simple layout and headings.
  • Use symbol supports and captioning appropriately.
  • Test materials with users and gather feedback.
  • Produce a short accessible brochure and a checklist for others to use.

Syllabus — modules

  1. Module 1 — Principles: why accessible communication matters and basic principles.
  2. Module 2 — Plain language: short sentences, clear verbs, and organising information.
  3. Module 3 — Easy Read: layout, headings, images and a simple Easy Read method.
  4. Module 4 — Symbols & supports: choosing symbols, simple boards and when to use them.
  5. Module 5 — Testing: checking materials with users and improving them.
  6. Module 6 — Toolkits: templates, checklists and captions for video and Auslan notes.

Assessment

You create a short accessible brochure or a one-page service checklist. We give templates. Your work is reviewed and you receive practical feedback and recognition on completion.

You should follow local consent procedures. The course includes guidance on checking with families and staff before trials.
Are symbols copyrighted?
We provide guidance on symbol libraries and licensing. Where needed we point to free-symbol options and accessible image credits.
Can we make our own Easy Read templates?
Yes. Templates are provided and you will practice making one as your assessment task.
